Tata Steel

Dewi Evans has carried out a presentation at Tata Steel Contractor Accident Prevention Advisory Committee (CAPAC) on all things DSEAR/ATEX.

Dewi highlighted the importance of inspecting ATEX equipment, primarily portable equipment in accordance with BS EN 60079 standards. Companies that work on potentially explosive areas, commonly known as ‘Zoned Areas’ need to understand the importance that the equipment that is taken into these areas are ATEX compliant, and have the need for periodic inspections. There was a particular focus on portable ATEX equipment such as – head torches, gas monitors and air movers.

This type of equipment sometimes ‘goes under the radar’. Portable ATEX equipment has the requirement to be inspected every 12 months, where the equipment is opened regularly, the inspection period drops to 6 months.

The presentation was warmly received by all the delegates who attended.
